Amazon Customer said Modernization Weakens a Classic Text Book.. This is the third revision of this classic work. I am a Greek teacher who has used the Pharr book for almost 10 years. Each successive revision has weakened the original text. The problem is that, in the original form, it offered a unique approach to a challenging but rewarding subject. Each revision has simply made the text more like other textbooks. The editors have endeavored to keep some of the original reference material but there is now too much explanatory material which distracts students from the main task of using Greek to explore Homer. I may reconsider using the text for this coming year.. "Excellent, you can't go wrong with this." according to A Customer. However, even though Homer is probably the best to be used as reading materials for those who had completed a year of introductory greek, this book functions not at all as a reading approach to teaching Greek (especially for those who are studying greek for the first time). It does not take you directly to Homer as the title might suggest. In fact, it takes you quite some distance (about 13 lessons) before you are given "Homer" to read. Worse, it doesn't teach you to actually read Homer at all. It instead teaches you to
