Star Trek books are a guilty pleasure of mine and I’ve read a lot of books set in this universe. This “autobiography” is now one of my favorites. Needless to say it is not a story, but rather an intimate look at the character of James T. Kirk, who was surprisingly, filled with doubts and misgivings his entire career and spent a good deal of time second guessing himself.The book starts off with a forward by Dr. McCoy who without hyperbole states, “He was the greatest hero who ever lived” and concludes with an afterword b. Shallow and without much feeling, the author makes the mistake of imposing his own social/political/religious views on Kirk pjf I've been a TOS (original series) fan since I was ten, have seen all the episodes multiple times, read the fanfiction (before there was pro fiction), Gene's "The Making of Star Trek"" back in the early 70s, and later a subset of pro fiction. This author gave me the impression that he didn't know Kirk that well, or that he couldn't replicate his voice, dialogue and the emotions .
